Server Storage Explained: HDD, SSD, NVMe and Hot-Swap Drives

Server storage holds operating systems, applications, databases and user files. The best storage type depends on capacity, speed, cost, durability and the importance of continuous availability.

Hard Disk Drives

HDDs store information on magnetic spinning disks. They normally provide large capacities at a lower cost, making them useful for backups, archives and large file collections.

Solid-State Drives

SSDs use flash memory and have no moving mechanical parts. They generally offer faster access times, lower noise and better resistance to vibration than traditional hard drives.

NVMe Storage

NVMe drives communicate through a high-speed interface designed for solid state storage. They can deliver very fast input and output performance for databases, virtual machines and demanding applications.

Hot-Swap Drive Bays

A hot-swap drive bay allows a failed drive to be removed and replaced without shutting down the server, provided that the server and storage controller support this feature.

Important: Hot-swapping a drive should only be performed when the server documentation confirms that the drive bay and storage configuration support it.

Important Storage Questions

  • How much storage capacity is required?
  • How many read and write operations are expected?
  • Will the server run databases or virtual machines?
  • Is redundancy required?
  • Are backups stored separately?
  • Does the server support the chosen drive type?

Summary

HDDs are useful for capacity, SSDs improve responsiveness and NVMe drives provide very high performance. Important data should always have a tested backup in addition to any storage redundancy.
