How to Install PC Components Step by Step

Assembling a PC is a logical process. Installing the components in the right order makes cable management easier and reduces the chance of damaging hardware.

Prepare Your Workspace

Use a clean, dry and well-lit workspace. Gather a Phillips screwdriver, cable ties and the manuals supplied with the motherboard, case and power supply.

Keep components on their anti-static packaging until you need them. Handle circuit boards by their edges and avoid touching exposed contacts.

Install the CPU, RAM and SSD

  1. Open the CPU socket and align the processor marker with the socket marker.
  2. Secure the processor without applying force.
  3. Install the memory modules into the recommended motherboard slots.
  4. Insert the M.2 SSD and secure it with the supplied screw or latch.
  5. Install the CPU cooler according to its instructions.

Important: If thermal paste is not already applied to the cooler, apply the amount recommended by the cooler manufacturer.

Install the Motherboard

Install the correct motherboard standoffs in the case before placing the motherboard inside. The board should rest on the standoffs, not directly on the case metal.

Secure the motherboard using the correct screws, but do not overtighten them.

Install the Power Supply and Graphics Card

Mount the power supply in the case and route the main cables toward the motherboard. Install the graphics card in the correct full-length expansion slot and secure it to the case.

Connect the Cables

  • 24-pin motherboard power cable.
  • CPU power cable near the top of the motherboard.
  • Graphics card power cable, if required.
  • Case power switch and front-panel connectors.
  • Case fan and CPU fan connectors.
  • Additional SATA or storage cables, if used.

The Bottom Line

Build slowly and check each connection against the motherboard manual. Taking your time is safer than trying to finish the build quickly.
