A successful PC build starts with planning. Choose your main purpose, establish a realistic budget and confirm that every part is compatible before buying anything.

The Main PC Components

Processor

The CPU handles general calculations and affects application performance, gaming and multitasking.

Graphics Card

The GPU renders games, video and 3D workloads. Some processors also include basic integrated graphics.

Memory

RAM gives applications temporary working space. More memory helps with multitasking and demanding software.

Storage

An SSD stores Windows, applications, games and personal files. NVMe SSDs are a common modern choice.

Choose Your Budget and Purpose

A PC for office work does not need the same hardware as a gaming, editing or streaming system. Decide whether your priority is gaming performance, quiet operation, productivity, content creation or upgrade potential.

Set aside part of the budget for the power supply, cooling, operating system and peripherals. Spending the entire budget on the graphics card can leave the rest of the system poorly balanced.

Basic Building Order

  1. Install the processor, memory and storage on the motherboard.
  2. Install the motherboard into the case.
  3. Install the power supply and connect the required cables.
  4. Install the graphics card and any additional cooling.
  5. Connect the front-panel, fan and storage cables.
  6. Test boot the system before closing the case.

Beginner tip: Never force a component into place. If a part does not fit, check its orientation, socket, mounting hardware and motherboard manual.

Final Checklist

Before powering on the system, confirm that the motherboard power cables, CPU power cable, graphics card cables and monitor connection are secure. After the first successful boot, install the operating system, motherboard drivers and graphics drivers.
