The History of Computer Networking and the Internet

The internet developed from research into reliable computer communication, packet switching and the connection of independent networks.

Early Computer Communication

Early computers were large, expensive machines that usually worked independently. Researchers wanted computers to share programs, information and expensive resources.

Traditional telephone systems used circuit switching, where a dedicated connection was reserved for the duration of a call. Computer researchers developed packet switching as a more flexible method.

Packet Switching

Packet switching divides data into small packets. Packets can travel through different routes and be reassembled at their destination. This approach made networks more efficient and resilient.

ARPANET and Internetworking

ARPANET connected research institutions and demonstrated that computers on separate networks could communicate. The development of TCP/IP later provided a common method for connecting different networks together.

From the Web to Modern Networks

Today’s networks support smartphones, streaming, artificial intelligence, online gaming, remote work, smart homes, cloud platforms and industrial systems. Modern networks also require strong security, high availability and efficient use of data.

Important: The internet is not one single computer. It is a collection of interconnected networks operated by many different organisations.

Summary

Networking grew from a need to share computing resources into the global internet used today. Packet switching, TCP/IP, Ethernet, the web and wireless communication were all important steps in that development.
